Get Your Moxie On! Introducing....Moxie Girlz

UPDATES:
7/1/2009: In response to this blog entry, a spokesperson from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. contacted me and informed me that it has committed to selling all Moxie Girlz branded products and collections at all 3,800+ stores in the United States. She would not comment on any Bratz merchandising plans for Fall 2009; also, see this announcement.

And MGA Entertainment spent five minutes last night creating this brand new fashion doll line?

Okay, kids, let's all gather around and sing the Moxie Girlz theme song! Ready? Here we go!

(NOTE: Written to parallel that intensely irritating track titled "Barbie Girl" by Aqua):

I'm a Moxie Girl,
In a Moxie World,
Life is silly,
Milli Vanilli....

Girl you know it's true,
Moxie Girlz is new,
Imagination,
What a strange creation....

There has been plenty of speculation and buzz about Moxie Girlz, when Bratz fans accidentally stumbled across the name by scanning in certain Bratz products at Target and seeing the name "Moxie Girlz" appear on the department store's self-scanning kiosk LCD screens. At first, these Bratz fans thought it was an error on the part of Target. Perhaps the massive product database at Target Corporation that contained all the items currently being sold at all 1,600+ Target stores in the United States had the entries for both Moxie Girlz and Bratz intertwined in the wrong locations. Perhaps Moxie Girlz was an entirely different toy line manufactured by an entirely different toy company such as Play Along Toys, Hasbro, or Bandai America.

However, with the current ongoing litigation between MGA Entertainment and Mattel over the rights to the Bratz franchise, Bratz fans had reason to believe that something was suspicious about Moxie Girlz. Although MGA Entertainment has not (at the time of this blog entry) revealed any specific details about Moxie Girlz, it appears that should the company lose all exclusive rights and ownership of the Bratz franchise to Mattel, Moxie Girlz is a brand new fashion doll line by MGA Entertainment that will be replacing Bratz.

All right, so the name of MGA Entertainment's brand new fashion doll line is Moxie Girlz. While the name itself sounds as exciting as eating a bowl of Cheerios for breakfast every morning, it does raise a lot of concern among Bratz fans. Would Bratz fans support a new fashion doll line that's replacing an established franchise they have embraced for the past eight years? How would Bratz fans transition to this new doll line after everything they loved and have grown accustomed to about Bratz? Does MGA Entertainment believe that Moxie Girlz will be a triumphant successor to Bratz, after a few other doll lines the company previously manufactured (e.g., Yummi-Land, 4Ever Best Friends, America's Next Top Model) failed to generate the same impact and reputation as Bratz? And, probably the most important question of all: Did the people behind the development and manufacturing of this Moxie Girlz fashion doll line previously work at Mattel?

The official website for Moxie Girlz is located at http://www.moxiegirlz.com/. I did a WHOIS lookup of this domain name, and it is registered to MGA Entertainment. On the website, the slogan is "Be true! Be you!" The website also features a definition of the word "Moxie":

mox·ie [mok-see]
n.
1. Positive attitude and confidence.
2. The courage to go for it.
3. Energy in everything you do.

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say....so what? And, who cares? I just want to know more about the slogan "Be true! Be you!" It's not exactly a powerful and inspiring statement ever made in the history of modern feminism. Then again, neither is "The only girls with a passion for fashion," and that sounds far more interesting than "Be true! Be you!" Honestly, Moxie Girlz is the most absurd name for a fashion doll line ever conceived. Play Along Toys, Hasbro, Bandai America, and even Mattel would never create a fashion doll line called Moxie Girlz. It's as though MGA Entertainment put forth no real effort to develop and manufacture a product where it actually cared about what customers — especially Bratz fans — wanted. If this is the best MGA Entertainment can come up with as a successor to Bratz, it won't be long before this company goes out of business and all those Moxie Girlz fashion dolls end up at the nearest Dollar General store.

Bratz had Yasmin, Cloe, Sasha, and Jade as the original "core four." What are the names of the core four characters for the Moxie Girlz, Maxi, JoJo, Candi, and Cheri? So when you need a little peace of mind, come on over boy anytime, I'll keep you happy and so satisfied, in my house....in my house....

BTW, love that track. And, love the music group that sings it, too. Heck, I would prefer the name of the music group, Mary Jane Girls, over "Moxie Girlz" any day! Too bad the name is copyrighted. Oh, well....

The initial Moxie Girlz product offerings include the Moxie Girlz dolls themselves, a Moxie Girlz Magic Hair collection, a Moxie Girlz Hair Salon playset, a Moxie Girlz "Art-titude" art kit, and a Moxie Girlz "Jammaz" fashion pack. Since Target is where Bratz fans encountered the name "Moxie Girlz," Target is where the new Moxie Girlz fashion doll line will be sold. Other retailers such as Toys R Us and K-Mart may follow suit and sell Moxie Girlz at its stores. As for Wal-Mart, it is not likely that Wal-Mart will be selling the Moxie Girlz products at any of the retailer's 3,800+ stores in the United States: Since Wal-Mart announced that it was no longer carrying the Bratz License Modular Merchandise after July 2009 and removing all Bratz-branded merchandise off their store shelves, as Bratz goes, so goes Moxie Girlz. (UPDATE 7/1/2009: In response to this blog entry, a spokesperson from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. contacted me and informed me that it has committed to selling all Moxie Girlz branded products and collections at all 3,800+ stores in the United States. She would not comment on any Bratz merchandising plans for Fall 2009; also, see this announcement.)

I'm not really sure where MGA Entertainment is going with this Moxie Girlz fashion doll line. And, I'm not really all that eager to find out, either, but this company is not going straight to the top, that's for sure. Moxie Girlz sounds like a doll line MGA Entertainment created at the last minute, since this company knows that it stands no chance of winning any appeal over the rights to the Bratz franchise. The evidence is stacked against MGA Entertainment. To put it more succinctly, it's signed, sealed, delivered for Bratz.

Unless there is something appealing about Moxie Girlz, unless there is a reason to believe that Moxie Girlz will accomplish the same phenomenal success as Bratz, I do not see myself supporting this brand new fashion doll line by MGA Entertainment. Moreover, I do not see how Moxie Girlz will be a serious competitor to Barbie, since Mattel has put the entire industry on notice that any toy company which enters the fashion doll business is in danger of being litigated into bankruptcy and destruction. In fact, the worst and most humiliating scenario that I see a very real possibility of happening is if Mattel's own "Bratz" dolls actually outsell and outperform Moxie Girlz. And wouldn't that be a shocking insult, for Mattel to eliminate the Moxie Girlz with its own version of the doll brand that made MGA Entertainment a successful and prosperous billion-dollar company? If that does happen, I guarantee that MGA Entertainment will never manufacture another doll line again and leave the fashion doll business entirely.

I would have to see the finished Moxie Girlz products in stores, so that I would have a better assessment and judgement on how successful I believe this new fashion doll line will be. But right now, it is not looking very optimistic for MGA Entertainment at this point. Regardless, I appreciate MGA Entertainment introducing Moxie Girlz as a means of leaving Bratz behind and starting everything from scratch. I would like to wish the many wonderful people at MGA Entertainment, as well as the company's President and CEO Isaac Larian, the best of luck in all their future endeavors.

It's hard to believe that Bratz has lasted as long as it has, in the midst of the many events that have taken place in our world, from 9/11 to the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. Sadly, nothing stays hot forever and nothing lasts forever. As Bratz fans, we all have our memories and our dolls. A true testament to Bratz is how ahead of their time these dolls really were, but how far these dolls are from being forgotten. Formal Funk, Rock Angelz, Tokyo A Go Go, Princess, Genie Magic, Forever Diamondz, Flashback Fever, Wintertime Wonderland, Wild Life Safari, XPress It!, Funk Out!....MGA Entertainment was definitely in its prime when it manufactured a fashion doll that dethroned Barbie. I will forever cherish what MGA Entertainment created with Bratz, and I will also cherish how this company changed my life and the lives of millions of children everywhere with Bratz. But above all and everything else, I will still be traveling to locations with my Bratz dolls and capturing photos of them, so I can share my photos with everyone. Long live Bratz, its legacy, and its impact in the toy industry!

I feel this whole Mattel lawsuit against MGA is BS. A strong arm tactic of the big kids on the block bullying out the little guy due to their huge popularity and success. My 10 year old daughter has played with the Bratz dolls since they came out. We will move forward and welcome the Moxie Girlz line up when it arrives in the store. I plan to boycott all Mattel & Barbie products forever I hope others do the same they suck! Big bullies!

Moxie dolls seem a bit boring, but they had to create a doll that wasn't as sexy as the Bratz dolls. So many mothers are against the Bratz dolls because they were too sexy. I think it's silly of them to be so against them, but with the Moxie Girlz, I think some of the mothers will like these better than the Bratz.

Personally, I love the Bratz dolls and hate the fact that it may be discontinued this year (12/31/09). If you look at the Moxie Girlz site, there's some Bratz in them. Some of their clothing are similar and the hair is similar. I think they will do well. A bit slow at first. Right now it's too early to tell. But once they can focus more on the dolls, I'm sure they'll make them look even better.

There are some dolls that work like the Bratz Head Gamez, where you can change their heads. Seems to be cool.
Let's see what happens.

It's not fair! But then again we could think of the moxie's as just the bratz.. but they won't be the same. I H8 MATTEL THEY'VE DESTROYIED LITTLE GIRLS LOVE FOR TOYS.. HA they won't see any of us buying those sickly anorexic dolls with blonde hair and weird 'american' accents (barbies). In fact barbies are worse than bratz dolls because to be honest, barbie has a boyfriend and they kiss and hug and love each other, Bratz don't do that they're respectable dolls that really are pretty, and love fashion!! At least they're telling girls to dress prettily than being a ugly idiot that every1 smirks at when they go past! well you could think of moxie girls as the bratz daughters????? Well very random thoughts but basicly we shouldn't be against the moxie's that much because after all they do look alot like the bratz (1 looks like yasmin, 1 looks like jade , 1 looks like sasha (and is called sasha), and 1 looks like cloe!) So lets try and cheer on the moxie girls and the bratz. (i g!
uess...) and anyways some shops still do sell bratz dolls so we're not completely scraped off them!! (YAY!!)

Love,

We bought a Moxie doll today. We love Bratz, we have tons of dolls and items by Bratz and so sad to see them go. I must say my daughter and all her friends prefer Bratz over Barbies. I really wish they could stick around! I don't know if these Moxie's will be as popular, they seem to imitate the bratz dolls very closely!

As much as me and my sister loves the Bratz, she said the Moxie girls are missing something. What they are missing is that we liked Bratz because they looked more grown up. Moxie girls look to little girlish. They should have just called them Girlz or something....but its better than nothing.

I stumbled across the Moxie Girlz last night at Target. The packaging set them apart. The head sculpts are very "Japanese" or "BJD" looking. I bought Avery in the Masquerade outfit (just because I loved Cloe in it!). I also like Avery in it because she reminds me so much of those expensive dollfie dolls in that outfit and the hair done the way it is. She has alabaster skin that is very pretty, and the face paint is very well done...almost looks hand painted...especially the line inbetween the lips. I was a bit miffed that they're using "leftover" BRATZ line clothes and accessories for their first time out of the starting gate, but the website proves that there will be unique clothing, etc. in the future. Upon taking Avery out of the box, She was even more beatiful. I wet her hair and brushed it out, (she's got the crappy MGA "curly" hair that's prone to the frizzies), and sprayed it to set it in the original curls. I'm planning on going back today to get the regular edition !
Avery and Sophina.

Whether or not this line will last is really up to the sales...but I like them and will buy a few. The basic dolls are only $10 at Target...so, how can I go wrong?

I think these dolls look slightly weird, as did the bratz when they first came out. mattel think they will have more buyers after putting bratz out of buisness but their buyers will just decrease dramatically because they are MURDERERS i used to buy both bratz and barbie and buy both anualls and the barbie cd and go on both websites about two weeks ago i bought some barbie cd-roms, i was shocked when i looked in the argos catolouge because i was thinking that the bratz looked a bit wierd AND COME ON!!???? 4 EVER KIDS???!!! I may still come to like these "moxie girls" as i have been on their website and may i say, it's crap

I think the new dolls are WAY better than Bratz! Cuter, less SLUTTY... and hello? Do we really want little girls growing up thinking its okay to be a BRAT? I'd never allow my daughter to have BRATZ dolls! I like the Moxie name & style way better. I think it's funny how people don't know the word Moxie - it's old slang from my grandparent's day... and super cute. The clothes look like they'll actually fit my Blythe dolls way better... SWEET!

I've only seen the dolls in photo's but my mother likes them. She really hates the Bratz and is a big fan of Barbie. I'm planning on buying one just to see how they look or try and find them at Toys R Us. If they look half as good in person as they do on-line I'm going to start collecting. Sorry to hear that Bratz is leaving and going to Mattel but we can't have everything we want.

You'll have to look at it from a strategical business point. Bratz live lavish lifestyles, wear high-end clothing, and have undeniable sex appeal. The economy is changing, families are changing and adapting. Mothers are looking closely at what they are buying for their children. The appeal of these Moxie dolls are targeted for a younger audience than Bratz was. They have clothes and figures that are more modest than Bratz, which is more appropriate for the target audience.
As an older girl who could very well be a mother now, I'd sooner buy Moxie for my daughter than Bratz. Myself, however... well I would go for Bratz. :P

Comment from: Bratz Lover in Transition [Visitor]

I'm a Bratz fan and I bought 4 of these Moxie dolls now. I like them and I think they'll do well, as long as they can make these dolls look slightly different. It would be awful to have Avery have the same face in every collection. Although there is an Avery with a green streak in her hair.

Some Bratz clothing can be used on the Moxie girlz, but not all clothes will fit. Moxie girlz hips are bigger than the Bratz. The Bratz jackets can fit on the Moxie girlz just fine.

One of the reasons why I have so many Bratz dolls, is that so many of the Bratz collections were different. Their faces were different, the color of the eyes, make-up and their hair were different. There are so many Yasmin dolls that look different. I enjoyed that. Like Sasha with long straight hair and then Sasha with short curly hair. Many might think all the faces looked the same on all Bratz dolls, but that's because of their lips.

I wouldn't mind the Second Bratz series to look like the Bratz dolls with smaller lips and a different body and perhaps taller like the Moxie girlz. The Moxie lips are a bit weird, but not so bad.

Since this is just the beginning and in the testing phase with customers, we're gonna hear a lot about how people don't like them and they won't buy them because they love the Bratz dolls. But once the Bratz dolls are done, there's nothing we can do, but enjoy the bratz dolls you DO have. I'm sure once the Bratz dolls are no longer being sold, you can always buy them at eBay.

It is impossible to imagine a world without the Bratz dolls.
And... No doll will ever replace the Bratz dolls!
When I first saw pictures of these Moxie Girlz I thought that they were some Bratz wannabees (just like the My Scene Barbie dolls). That was until I found out that they were also produced by MGA Entertainment. I think that the Bratz fans will accept them just as "another doll", but not as a replacement for the Bratz dolls.
I still hope that by some miracle, the Bratz will still continue to be produced (by MGA Entertainment).

Bratz was an excellent doll brand, and will always be. I'm trying to get one before they take them all out of stores. Once they do that, I'm gonna get my first Moxie Girl. I'm not replacing my favorite girls that have a passion for fashion. But Moxie Girls look almost similar to Bratz, don't they have big lips too? Just to say, I would love Bratz and Moxie Girls equally, unless Moxie Girls arn't as great as the Bratz were...

Because of the lawsuit with Mattell, MGA can not use the name Bratz any longer. The new Moxie Girlz dolls are what they created to replace their popular Bratz doll line. MGA can not create a doll that looks exactly like the Bratz dolls so they changed a few things to create Moxie Girlz. Moxie Girlz have a slightly smaller head and lips. Their clothes seem to cover a little bit more too. What they did was try to create as few of changes as possible from the Bratz line but enough that they can legally make and sell this doll brand without ending in another lawsuit with Mattel. My daughter likes the Moxie Girlz and says they look like the Bratz dolls. I grew up on Barbie but loved the fashion look that Bratz brought. Moxie girls seem to have the same fashion look but a little less provactive which I like.

this is great news!!! the new bratz rule!!! the moxie girlz are a better example to little kiddies. by the looks of the new dolls they don't always wear mid riffs. their heads r smaller so they don't look anarexic and their bodies r normal sized. the name bratz made them sound like they r really annoying and stuff but i love the name moxie girlz. their faces look sort of normal too. when will they release in Australia? it said something in a magazine about this month (september) hmmm.... i wanna get one soon.... hope the bratz go soon... don't like the way they look... too skinny... do the bratz ever eat?

ok I'm a mom of a 5 yr old girl. I have never liked bratz ever since I saw a baby bratz with a thong instead of a diaper. I think that the bratz concept is turning our young girls into something we try to get them to not be, a stripper or worse. what child that age group (4-8) should be wearing a thong or wearing that much makeup. Now on the other side, I think that the moxie girls, even though they have similar faces and such, are a much better option to the bratz. It seems to me that they are trying to send a more natural and positive message that being yourself is better for a young girl, and it gives them more realistic expectations. They have less make-up, more age appropriate clothes and such. My daughter will tell everyone that bratz are bad. She even asked me if moxie girls were ok. I told her she could have one, and as long as they keep up this new image I will continue to buy them for her and her friends. They are just as good as barbie to me. Barbie tries to send a positive message also to all the barbie haters out there. anyways had to vent that to everyone on this forum.

I was looking through Target myself and saw Moxie at first I said cool a new Bratz doll then it said Moxie and I looked and was very displeased with the way the doll looked. To me it's no fashion doll. What MGA did was just take some of the Bratz lines and put them on Moxie and one of the girls names is Sasha. I think MGA and a lot of companies are sexist these days I mean there are hardly if any boy stuff in products any more even Bratz they don't make the boyz. I haven't even seen any boys at all in Moxie maybe if they made a Moxie boy I would actually buy. I really hate the way the Moxie girlz lips are they have lines in them and their eyes do too to make them more realistic which makes them ugly. I also hate the Moxie girlz logo Be true be you come on!! At least Bratz had a catchy logo which made you want to buy them and a rockin' theme song to go with it. That's just my opinion on these stupid looking dolls I will always be a Bratz fan and have been buying as many as I can before they are all gone because I have been to the store and there isn't even any there. Oh and when I was at the store I saw this kid who was looking to buy a doll and they sure heck didn't buy Moxie every time I'm at the store I don't see anyone buying Moxie but a lot of people are buying those Liv dolls I think that's what they are called anyone know who makes those? Thanks for reading my comment.

Looks like we should keep our Bratz dolls in their original packages since they will become quite collectible due to not being manufactured anymore?

I felt sad because I'm a huge fan of the Bratz and I have to be honest it broke my heart & tears almost fell. LOL
I love the Bratz ever since they first came out, they have a sentimental meaning to me, I remember I used to play with this little darlings *SIGHS* I think it defines my childhood and I tell you everyone these dolls aren't just dolls, they also brings smile. Smiles to everyone, smile when a mother sees a child happy, smile of a girl when she opened that semi-triangled shaped acetate plastic packaging for the first time, smile when you play with your friends. They were there to make me look forward to go to school when I was little, since I was really a shy person then, I rarely have friends, sounds loser-ish but yes, the Bratz were my best friends. So I would just like to say that it fulfilled a lot smiles to girls... Aw, me & my sister's going to miss them. I was really hoping they would win the battle against Mattel. Maybe I'll just share my little collection of the Bratz to a daughter/niece someday. They didn't even said goodbye. :( lol
Maybe it's the time to say good bye to them, Maybe the "Bratz Era" is over and it's time for the new breed of dolls to rule. But we'll never know... As for Mattel I hope they'll find their conscience. I can't say no more to them.

I know the Bratz are just dolls, but they're something.
Long live the Bratz! The ONLY girls with the passion for fashion! :)

Love, Gabby

P.S. My favorite Bratz girls were Cloe & Meygan. ;)
*I just hope that they will come back someday...

How can the moxies be seen as successors to the Bratz. The most beautiful features of the Bratz Ladiez were their eyes and lips.....and the moxies just can't compare in this regard. They have the faces and goofy expressions of blow-up dolls. Yuck!

I'm sad to say that although I bought a Cloe several years ago as a gift for a close female friend who uncannily resembled her(same flaxen hair, deep blue eyes and gorgeous red lips), I didn't seriously take interest in them until the death sentence was handed down a year ago. :( Today, I have about 25 Bratz, a couple of Cloes, four Sashas, two Jades, and a crapload of Yasmins(LOL). I also have a number of secondary characters, the pride of my collection are two setz of Bratz Twiinz, still sealed in their window box.

I know this isn't the forum to discuss Bratz themselves, and I have nothing against the moxies....other than they're much less attractive than their predecessors. I agree with those who say give them a chance to sink or swim on their own merits, because it just isn't fair to compare Moxie Girlz to Bratz Ladiez.....they'll always come up short.

Well, the reality is that once mattel takes over, Bratz is highly unlikely to be Bratz, the chances are that they will become a diluted version of the My Scene dolls so the original style dolls people love. I like the moxie girls, the new concept of drawing with pens on the dolls encourages younger kids to be more interactive with their toys. My youngest is in love with hers. I did originally think the Bratz were too slutty and had decided not to buy them for my girls, but I must admit, the costumes and originality won me over. The my scene were ok, but not particularly creative. I think the biggest issue is mattel's advertised determination to force other doll businesses out of the market in an attempt to suspend their slow demise. They would do better to take a long look at their lines and come up with something new. There are only so many princesses and princes one kid wants to own. I'd like to see some historical fashions in a basic range. Look how popular the costume dolls are - is there any reason why they can't do a historical set of barbies? At least they won't be attempting grunge or emo and failing miserably.

From comments I have read on various sites, the 'general' opinion from Bratz fans seems to be that they are very upset at loosing Bratz, and are not that keen on Moxie Girlz.

Poor MGA, it has had a hard legal battle with that vile company Mattel, lost it's biggest seller, and now, in a real effort to give us something back, and compete with Mattel, has done a lot of work and spent a small fortune creating a new range of dolls, only to be critisised left right and centre.

I for one love Moxie Girlz and all they stand for, 'Be True To You' is a great mantra for any kid, in fact it's a great mantra for most adults to. We are still going to get a great range of dolls and outfits from MGA, not to mention games and accessories etc...so lets embrase them and support the company that gave us so much for the past eight years, or should you drop them like a hot cake, and treat them basically like Mattel have ?

As for Mattel Bratz, there is no way on Gods earth would you get a cent out of me for one of those, Mattel as far as I am concerned, are more concerned with huge profits than the feelings of children and collectors, they don't deserve our money, boycott them, I would like to see them go under. Ruth handler would be spinning in her grave if she saw how her company was operated now.
