For years, I have always insisted that MGA Entertainment was a company full of surprises. And it looks like this company and its President and CEO Isaac Larian may have pulled off a big surprise with its brand new Moxie Girlz fashion doll line. I got a chance to view more images of the Moxie Girlz products and collections, and I'm impressed. Moxie Girlz is actually much better than what I had originally perceived it to be.

Several people within MGA Entertainment came across these two entries I posted on my Bratz Heaven Blog:

Get Your Moxie On! Introducing....Moxie Girlz (06.15.2009):
http://cannellefraiche.bratzheaven.com/b2evolution/blog1.php?p=32

Moxie Schmoxie: Moxie Girlz Revealed.... (06.18.2009):
http://cannellefraiche.bratzheaven.com/b2evolution/blog1.php?p=33

This company was so infuriated with what I wrote that their objective was not so much about creating a successor to Bratz — it was about vindicating me after I slammed the Moxie Girlz for all the nasty things I wrote about them. Yes, I will admit that I stated the Moxie Girlz was doomed to fail. Yes, I will admit that I stated the Moxie Girlz was "just another fashion doll line that would be ruthlessly disposed of and entombed in Barbie's wake." Yes, I will admit that I stated the Moxie Girlz will end up at the nearest Dollar General store. And yes, I will admit that I thought the name of this brand new fashion doll line reflected something that MGA Entertainment created at the last minute....or to be more exact, five minutes.

Then again, I'm not the only one who expressed pessimism about Moxie Girlz: Several other doll collectors believed the same theories I mentioned about this brand new fashion doll line, and their initial opinions were a lot more harsh than what I wrote! If a couple of blog entries can inspire MGA Entertainment to prove me wrong and create a quality successor to Bratz, then I am somewhat comforted knowing that I did my job in making this company aware of what is expected when the Moxie Girlz hit store shelves during Fall 2009. However, I also think MGA Entertainment and Mr. Larian have a much more ambitious objective in mind with the Moxie Girlz, and it is beyond creating a brand new fashion doll line intended as a successor to Bratz.

I guess I've been too confined in the Bratz universe to expand my horizons, that I anticipate any new fashion doll lines developed and manufactured by MGA Entertainment to be just like Bratz. Yummi-Land was a completely different fashion doll line than Bratz, but I thought that it was a very unique and creative fashion doll line because of the sweet colorful environment it created. In fact, the Bratz Heaven colors (fuchsia, blue, violet, pink, hazel, orange) were inspired by the Yummi-Land Crème Soda Pop Girls collection, and that's quite odd since Bratz Heaven was intended to promote and support the only girls with a passion for fashion — not girls who "were as sweet as they smelled." Although I found Yummi-Land too "kiddy" for my taste, I still believed it would be something of a successor to Bratz. Unfortunately, MGA Entertainment discontinued Yummi-Land after two years due to poor sales. In retrospect, Yummi-Land was overshadowed by Bratz, quickly becoming a "forgotten" doll line. It never really built the fanbase that it could have and never really gathered the momentum to become an established product line for the company.

While Moxie Girlz is not the same as Bratz, it appears MGA Entertainment has a great opportunity to get back in the race and remain a serious competitor in the fashion doll business. Okay, so the names of these Moxie Girlz collections such as Moxie Girlz Art-titude and Moxie Girlz Jammaz sound cheesy. And based on the initial images of the Moxie Girlz, the dolls themselves look....well, they're okay, but not spectacular enough to convince me to purchase them. They look more like 10-year-old little girls! That's what makes the Moxie Girlz such a hard sell for me, but I guess that's the demographic MGA Entertainment is targeting with the Moxie Girlz, not so much adult collectors such as myself.

What I am impressed with about Moxie Girlz is that the products and collections demonstrate how the characters in this brand new fashion doll line have their own passion for fashion, their own individuality, their own style in expressing themselves, and that each character has a certain personality reflected in her fashion passion. I'll give credit to MGA Entertainment for harnessing those attributes into the Moxie Girlz, since these were the same attributes that made Bratz the overwhelming phenomenon that it is and that it will forever be remembered as. It emphasizes how this company pays attention to trends that click with teenage and preteen girls (i.e., "tweens"), without doing things the old-fashioned standardized way.

With all these attributes about fashion passion, individuality, expression, and personality, will it be enough for the Moxie Girlz to be successful? The big, bad world of Mattel seems to think so, and it is conceiving a war plan to cripple this fashion doll line with the misconception that MGA Entertainment is a company which creates consumer products by stealing ideas and employees from other toy companies. MGA Entertainment has lost a lot of trust with its vendors, its licensees, and its customers because of such misconceptions, never mind the ongoing litigation against Mattel over the rights to the Bratz franchise. The company will have to work assiduously to earn that trust again, and Moxie Girlz represents an opportunity to convince a skeptical public that it can develop and manufacture some of the most innovative consumer products in the marketplace without stealing ideas, employees, or anything else to accomplish its long term objectives. Every ending in life is a new beginning, and for MGA Entertainment it's a new beginning to start fresh and put behind all the recklessness of the past eight years. But what a great eight years it was.

Speculation abounds over the Moxie Girlz, and MGA Entertainment has been put under a microscope in order to defend itself from any criticism and cynicism intended to disrupt the potential success of this brand new fashion doll line. Among the questions that are being asked: Does MGA Entertainment believe the Moxie Girlz will be a successful fashion doll line? Will Moxie Girlz pose a serious threat to Barbie, much less Mattel's own "Bratz" dolls? Do consumers still have this negative impression that Moxie Girlz was "illegally" developed and manufactured by some former designer at Mattel who sold his trade secrets to MGA Entertainment so that this brand new fashion doll line would be realized? And, perhaps the most important question of all: Did the people behind the development and manufacturing of the Moxie Girlz previously work at Mattel?

The toy industry was a much kinder industry when Bratz was first introduced in 2001. MGA Entertainment was just your small neighborhood toy company, always searching for the next innovation that would catapult it into a recognized and renowned competitor in the industry. The company had hoped Bratz would be that next innovation to pull off this accomplishment and become a "Barbie beater." However, Bratz failed in its first year and most consumers believed Bratz was just a fad that would last one season, never to be heard of again. Even Mattel believed Bratz was a failure, and the thought of litigating Bratz out of existence never occured. Only when MGA Entertainment continued building the brand did Bratz start outselling and outperforming Barbie during the franchise's peak years from 2003 through 2006, and it threw executives at Mattel into a panic. Tim Kilpin, former Senior Vice President of Girls Marketing And Design at Mattel, wrote several documents stating that Mattel needed to develop a war plan to kill Bratz. One of those documents was an E-Mail dated April 2, 2004, under the title "Confidential: The Barbie Call To Action," where Kilpin mentioned that, "....the Barbie business is in serious decline....the old way of building the Barbie brand just doesn't work anymore. We have been out-thought and out-executed. And it stops now." (also, see this: http://cannellefraiche.bratzheaven.com/articles/timkilpinemail.txt)

That type of context illustrates how the toy industry has now become a very savage industry, and Mattel is a perfect example of how savage it has become. But many other toy companies also developed and manufactured consumer products that have evolved too big for Bratz to emerge a serious competitor: Playmates (Disney Fairies), Hasbro (Littlest Pet Shop), Play Along Toys (Hannah Montana). It isn't so much Mattel litigating Bratz out of the consumer marketplace, as it is the consumer marketplace has dramatically changed for Bratz to remain a profitable and iconic commodity. This is where the Moxie Girlz come in, and despite how successful this brand new fashion doll line aspires to be, it may not last long enough if consumers are not purchasing them — or worse, if Mattel threatens litigation against MGA Entertainment over the Moxie Girlz because of some pissy accusation about "laid-off employees working for a competitor."

MGA Entertainment is confident that with Moxie Girlz, it can once again knock Barbie off her pedestal and set the house on fire at Mattel. The initial product lineup indicates the potential for the Moxie Girlz to be successful, but I still do not see myself supporting this brand new fashion doll line. I've been a Bratz fan since July 2004, and any transition to any other fashion doll line would be immensely difficult. Bratz is the only fashion doll line I really and truly ever identified with. That could change over time if Moxie Girlz grows on me and becomes as much an overwhelming phenomenon as Bratz was during its eight-year tenure. Nobody is certain how long this brand new fashion doll line will last. If Moxie Girlz achieves its pinnacle of success two or three years from now, and if I see something about Moxie Girlz that I can identify with, that's when I will realize how stupid I was to say all these nasty things about Moxie Girlz, that I may end up supporting this fashion doll line after all. Heck, I didn't like the Bratz dolls when I first heard of them, but look at what has transpired with Bratz eight years later.

Of course, Mattel has other ideas, and you can be rest assured that it is keeping a very watchful eye on Moxie Girlz. The threat of Barbie still looms over the heads of Mr. Larian and the many wonderful people at MGA Entertainment. It won't be long before we endure this same vicious cycle all over again where Mattel eliminates Moxie Girlz from the consumer marketplace and litigates MGA Entertainment into bankruptcy and destruction. Even if the evidence finds that Moxie Girlz was not created by a former Mattel employee who breached his contract and sold trade secrets to MGA Entertainment, Mattel will come out aggressive and do whatever it takes to establish its complete and total domination in the toy industry. Mr. Larian was right: Anyone who dares enter the fashion doll business has a target on their back. Beware of the snipers perched high above 333 Continental Boulevard in El Segundo, California, because they're watching, they're waiting, and they're ready to fire the first shot.

10 year olds are not "little". I am 10 and I'm a senior at Primary School. 6 year olds are little. In fact I have my own site. Check out fairyfoocool101.wordpress.com.

Hmmm... As for the Moxie Girlz ending up in an Op Shop I do not believe that will happen. I will stand by the Moxie Girlz. The Moxie Girlz have gotten to a good start with ads and it's own website which I believe will go strong unlike the unsuccessful Bratz dolls. Bratz dolls will end up in the Op Shop instead unlike your prediction since they have already gone up in flames and out of buisness. Goodbye cruel Bratz!

Actually, Bratz were always cool dolls, I don't care what anyone says. They were different and had very independent personalities! I out grew all the Barbie Princess stuff and got into those Fabu Fashion dolls called Bratz. I do not think Moxie Girlz could ever match up to Bratz,

1. Those stupid colorful outfits make them look like bahamas and clowns.
2. They have cute faces, but they need more edge and personality, they all dress the same for god's sake!
3. They don't have any boys! C'mon now, every doll has a boy doll to go with it.
4. Moxie Girlz have faces of fashion models, all they need is makeup and they are good to go.

Maybe Moxie Girlz will make it, who knows?

Bratz was not my favorite and frankly Im glad they are out of the making. I saw Moxie girls the other day and actually, Im kinda partial to them. They seem to promote more than wear make up and short trashy clothes like Bratz.
I can see myself buying one for my little sister in the future. But Barbie will always rule our household. <333

Matel tried to keep their monopoly with their so-called perfect blond hair, blue eyed treasure. When they finally got their reality check with the Bratz Dolls I was overjoyed. I have never liked Barbie dolls & the fact that someone finally had some diversity made my day. I have two young girls that love the Bratz dolls and my youngest could pass off as one. I'm glad to see MGA has developed an alternative that Matel cannot claim rights to. Matel seems to be run by a bunch of overgrown spoiled bullies. If they decided to produce the Bratz dolls because they own the rights, I would never purchase one. MGA rocks because they refuse to be kicked out of the game.

This to me seems very intriguing. I myself are found supporting mostly anything new that mga has to offer, the moxie line at first did not really appeal to me, I as a doll collector seemed to overwhelmed with my bratz, reaching my 380th bratz doll in my collection aproximately 2 weeks ago(not bragging or anything, just showing that us mother's can be collectors as well and that bratz dont only appeal only to little girls). The moxie line i must admit has grown on me a tad bit, there cutely innocent faces are to adore and there fashion sence is a bit too kiddy but goes well with all that cuteness. the quality of the doll is an improvement than these last lines bratz offer( no offence MGAE but the new hair bratz are sporting is ridulously messy and hard to handle( lines like cowgirls and wildlife should have had nice saran hair like you used in the girls really rock line) but then again i understand your predicament. saran hair must be more expensive and really the company is in no position to waste any more money on the final bratz although personally if i was Mr.Larian i would make the Bratz line go out with a BANG!but we cant always get what we want. I as a faithful consumer of your Bratz and Moxie line are asking that you add something a little more to the moxie's, something that will attract some of your old bratz fans/collectors. Moxie's are doing okay, but for the little girls there intended for, really not for the collectors. in the bratz merchandise line you always though about both categories of consumers realeasing playline dolls and those that were more meant for serious tween/teen/adult collectors( one of my favorites being your porcelain editions Daphne and Anyssa) which always kept me excited and wanting more, scavanging my nearest Toys R US/Target/Walmart for new aditions to add to my collection. In formation to back me up is the repeated fashions your Moxie's are playing, simalar to those of costume party cloe and yasmin, Lexa's however was very original and caught up the most attention, being i must say the best seller in my nearest target. It was honestly a pain in the tuckus to find that lexa, but it was worth it because it was a new doll to stand out in my collection. Enough about me i guess, im just one person of your ever growing fanbase, i know for a fact the bratz line will never die out because it gave me one of the most beautiful and memorable dolls that i proudly display in my collection and i know it gave many other little girls and collectors out there the same happiness and joy it gives me. Hopefully your moxie line will survive, ill keep my fingers crossed but all iask is that you keep your collector fanbase in mind, just like we always keep your company in ours.

HI there, i happened to stumble across your blog searching for information about these new Moxie Girlz dolls. my 4 year old is begging for one, as she is just starting to build her doll collection. i myself have not played with barbies for about 12 years (a young mom!), was a little wary about the different dolls now available and the messages they are putting across to our children.

growing up with barbie, you didnt have much choice in terms of how your dolls looked, or what they wore (beyond what you could afford); whereas now there are bratz, moxie, barbie and other offshoots.

let me get to the point here! when my daughter was first born.. i toyed with the idea of keeping barbie out of my house in order to promote a healthier self-image for my little one.. emaciated dolls with too much makeup and large breasts aren't the best example for individuality.. but these days the body shape has changed, and is now more woman-friendly, she even wears less makeup! therefore, i dont mind having Barbie in my house.

Bratz, however, is something i steadfastly REFUSE to bring into my house. while the body-type is closer to that of a normal girl, the message i get from Bratz dolls is that dressing provocatively and wearing TONS (way more than poor barbie!) of makeup is what makes you special. i have never seen a Kelly doll with mascara, lipstick and an outfit reminiscent of lingerie.. but i have with Bratz Babiez.

i'm personally looking forward to the middle ground between the 2 extremes. I don't see why children need to play with dolls that represent a 30 year old woman.. or heavily-sexed 12 year old.. I'd rather have the dolls that represents a 10 year old and does a respectable job doing it.

angela c, i feel as though your comment regarding bratz dolls seems a little biased, preffering barbie when im not sure if youve noticed, has the same hooker heels and amount of make up as the bratz dolls, probably beacause youre stuck watching cheap barbies aimed at little girls when your completely missing the bigger picture. It appears as though you have missed A TON of barbie collections, from swimsuit models to sexed up crime fighters in tight leather clothing. BRATZ DO NOT give the image or message "of that dressing provocatively and wearing TONS (way more than poor barbie!) of makeup is what makes you special" thats all in your head. any doll gives the message you want it to give, so if you feed your childrfen the idea of heavy makeup and short skirts makes you slutty and that everybody will like you, you have something really bad going on with you. there are many young adults and older women who dress like that, most notibly many celebrities who people face on a day to day basis. So if your child is to SOMEDAY encounter an adult or a friend when she's mutch older who likes to dress somewhat skimpy, her thought would be excatly that of which you taught her as a child..." she's a slut, a hoe, whichever because of the way she dresses, im going to completely ignore who she is and what she belives in because of her outer appearence. she is a bad influence for me and i will not befriend her." thats basically what your teaching. offer little diversity and all you bring up is hate and biased thinking. this not only goes to you, and im not hating on you or retaliating because of your thoughts and beliefs on these dolls, but im basically speaking my mind, spreading the word to all who think in shielding themselves from dolls like these will hopefully protect them from "bad influence". have you not seen the media lately, cant you make any comparisons beetween these dolls and people you see today?

I saw these dolls at Walgreens and they look ALOT like Bratz - minus the skanky clothes. I think more parents will be willing to buy their daughters dolls that don't wear such skimpy clothes that you can see up their skirts in the boxes.
As I see it, they're just modified Bratz -cute faces minus the trashy clothes.

ALSO 10 year old girls ARE little girls -nothing wrong with that -they shouldn't be in a rush to get bras & thongs & start staying out late at parties with boys and alcohol.

I have never necessarily been a big brats fan,but i have had a point in life where i got obsessed with brats and bought a bunch, but now that I'm 12 i have realized that they're just scanky dolls with an hourglass shape with tacky make-up,at age 7 i was a barbie girl then 8 i wanted everything Polly pocket! 11 i wanted LIV dolls(which are fabulous look them up) and now i want a moxie for Christmas, moxieS actually,i want the blondie and the pale brunette, i am not devastated that bratz are off the market but i do feel bad for the collectors who hovered there life around getting every brat ever made,i also feel bad for the kids who have dreamed for one.but i do believe that moxie's are a positive influence with a unique fashion sense and i thank there the next doll line on my shelf!:)
i'm interested to see what other stuff comes for
moxie and fingers crossed MGA made the right choice stopping bratz, and check out LIV dolls! they're so cool and they dress like a normal teen!but moral of this comment is "i luv moxies!" :P

More appropriately, Mattel is trying to use the Bratz in 2010. Do you think they'll do a great job? Nah! Don't think so...Cloe might end up being the lead girl...since they're SO pro-Barbie, and pro-bimbo. I wouldn't be surprised if they changed Cloe's personality....

Well... I LOVE MOXIE GIRLZ DOLLS FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART! Moxie girlz are funky, cute, and stylish, unlike the ugly, trashy, cheap look of Bratz. Even the name is horrible; who wants a "Brat" for a doll? They have bodies that are almost impossible to have (though who would want a bratz body) and their makeup is hideous! I know I would never give a doll like this to a kid; it doesn't lead a good example of how one should be like. I have purchased one of the sets of the baby bratz with 2 pets inside, but mostly for the littlest pet shop like pets. And at least the baby doesn't have giant lips and a face smeared with makeup. I have never been a great barbie fan, because of their weird bodies and ugly faces. But now that MGA Entertainment has come to the light and are producing dolls that are actually GOOD! Moxie girlz are wonderful. I have two and I want more, more, more of moxiegirlz! Finally a good doll to collect! The artitude line, the masquerade line, the pj line, everything is so great! The only thing I would add to moxie girlz is a red head girl and pets! I love moxie girlz, and I don't wish they would end barbies, just be over them. I hope to see more products from Moxiegirlz soon. Trash the bratty Bratz, Moxie girlz, here I come!

This new line of Moxie Girls is unique, appropriate, and too-cute. Barbie dolls are great, too(why do you think they keep making them for??). But Bratz dolls, on the other hand, have huge, over-sized lips and very provocative clothing. And maybe you dont think your daughter will want to dress up like her doll, but its the same thing with her friends- they always eventually want to or start acting like their surroundings. Bratz dolls are just dolls, but they might want to stop dressing them up like Hoochie Mamas. And anyways, you can always make a doll with a great, strong, independent personality without going overboard. Thats what theyve done with Moxies.
Never liked bratz dolls anyways, no offense to anyone...

I don't interest about bratz or moxie girlz, I'm a barbie fan,
But sometimes I want to buy something different.

I think barbie loose by moxie girlz,
because mattel always following their tradition.

They don't have a free.

They can't make more many idea's doll,
And other doll's company make doll with the other idea's dolls.

They will success.

Mattel must think about other items.

And about barbie must change with successful idea.

I think the whole war between Barbie and pretty much any thing else is really lame. I like Bratz (absolute Jade fan) and I like Barbie but I've seen nothing but wonderful things with the Moxie girlz. Bratz and Barbie always had that sex appeal that seemed to worry me when it came to young girls playing them. Moxies are just Bratz but younger and more creative.

Hi there, I live in the UK and I LOVE Moxie Girlz. I've only just discovered them and I want them all ! Ha Ha.....I am a doll collector, see my website, and these are the first modern dolls I've collected ! I have four so far, all basics, two Sophina's (One in pink puffball top and jeans, with laptop and glasses, the other in white pants with pretty bustier style top), Avery (white pants and black top), and Lexa ( Pink party/ballet dress and skateboard). It would be great to have a chrono;logy of d releases, as I have no idea what are the first releases etc etc...J x x x x

I live in the UK, I am a huge Moxie Girlz fan, I have three of them and I am about to buy my fourth. HOWEVER. They are no way as great as the Bratz. The Moxie Girlz are a little more creative, but some of their outfits looks like they've just come out of a rainbow!! I just got a Bratz Designed By Jade today, and looking at her compared to my Moxie Girlz dolls, MGz are nothing! But I have chosen to support both of these products by MGA Entertainment, and will continue to do so. About the picture - Yes, that's what Barbie thinks. She appears all blonde and thick and pink on the outside, in the inside, aside from 99.9% plastic, she's Eeevviiill... LOL!
